I have contacted a guy who is very good at C++ - made a C++ game engine is 30 hours, anyway he seems willing to help us get some improvements done to the CopperCube engine - great idea yes ?

If we all put in some cash to buy the Studio version and send to him, he might be able to add some cool functionality to it for us...

I suggest anyone willing to join the group willing to pay for it also have a top 3 improvements request and order then by number (1, 2 or 3). We send to him the list of requested features and leave it up to him what to start on first ??

What do you think ?
I for one am up for it...

My reply to him was - "
Good job. I have an older C ++ game engine that needs some tweaking - CopperCube 6. Would you be willing to help a group of forum members with this?"

He answered back - "Cool! I never got to use the CooperCube".

So he seems willing to help out...could be good...

I don't think this will work... the Studio version contains a "game client source code" - but that is not the same as the source of the computer program. so I am not sure you can actually make changes to the CC programming as you intend.

And Niko owns CC and has not released it as a 'open source' license, so any attempt to modify it would be a copyright problem?

sorry, but I would think Niko will not allow someone else to rewrite his program - only he can make the updates we all are waiting to see... so I will just have to be patient and wait for Niko.

No, Studio lets you change anything you like - so long as you don't try on-sell it in competition obviously..

Niko says: "it contains all code that is necessary to compile the .exe file which is generated by CopperCube when you hit "publish" or "test".
It contains everything, all 3d engine, physics, logic, scripting etc code.
The only thing which is not included in source is the audio output, but that's included as precompiled dll (irrklang)".

So its ok to get modified by anyone - that's the whole point of Studio edition...

well, o.k. then... it looks like you have it covered.

Do you have the pro version on CC5? under the "help" - "about" tab you can download the C++ source for it... also the Android source and the flash source.

maybe that would be something you already have to look at and get started...

the doc says...

"This is the source of the C++ (=Win32 and Mac OS X) client of CopperCube.

You can use it for extending it and creating your own games with it."

looking thru the folders, it does seem to contain all the .cpp and .h files for everything CC does...

*edit*
looking for more info on the client source - 'just_in_case' has posted a lot about it in the past. this doesn't give any code for the CC editor... only for adding to the .exe game file you can create? does that mean you have to modify the client code for each specific game you are working on?

Niko wrote in a post:

"Not exactly what you are asking about. To modify the C++ code, change it, recompile it and then run the created app, which then will load the file you tell it to load."

sorry, I am just trying to understand what I would be able to do if I decided to join your group...

Robo - sorry about all this... I was really interested in your idea, but all i seem to have done was make it confusing for myself. this will be my last post about it.

Your idea to get someone to help out with mods seems like a solid deal. I hope you get enough support to move forward!

That's cool.

Good to check things out first..

I spoke to the coder as he wont work for free unfortunately so yet to hear back what he wants to charge...

hope not too much....but payment for work done is expected I guess - especially for professionals.

only tweaks and moderate changes are expected (not rebuilding the engine). ie not things like DX10 or adding PBR or things of that nature as too time consuming.

Why don't we just pay Niko to add the features?

That way, it keeps everything in house with people who are passionate about the project and Niko presumably knows Coppercube inside-out.

If it's outsourced to a 3rd party, there will be forks in the project and it may introduce complications for future development.

Yep, was only thinking about this the other day. I was originally under the impression the contact might do some stuff for free but found out he wants to charge so may not be as good as originally thought to use external parties, cheaper to us good ol Niko...(if he doesn't charge too much either)...

I am trying to get the best bang for your buck....so its up in the air at the moment...

By the way, I don't think that there have been many significant and important changes since the fifth version of the copper cube, so I think that we can take its source code. And it just has open source code for owners of the professional version (as I remember). So why not? :P

I am pretty sure I already offered to pay Niko to make changes in the past.

I am perfectly willing to do so. I need Oculus Quest support so I can deploy to XR and specifically, Oculus Quest. PBR textures would be a close second. 3rd would be a much better terrain editor.

If Niko is willing, give me a price and ill get it paid.
