Suddenly I am no more able to change the background color of a main menu item. If I try to select the item always the sub-item is selected and I can change the color there. How can I select the main item?

You can select the background of the whole bar using the BackgroundColor property, and the background color of the popup menu via the "PaneBackgroundColor" property. Both in the property window on the bottom left.
