As promised, here's the video guide on how to make a 3D model from a 2D image (very quick and easy method)...

Make a basic textured 3D model in less than 30 seconds! (using only 3DBuilder free from MS Windows store)...

🔎︎

Example in the video is a stack of $100 Bills (for speed and simplicity) but once you get the hang of it, there are additional tools (slice/subtract/paint etc) to enable you to make complex models with several parts and UV painting/texturing.

Exported .obj models are optimised (with tiny file-sizes) and load straight into Coppercube (with materials/textures already applied). Model in the example is only 1.29kb!

@VP

the model looks good, but unfortunately I can't use 3DBuilder due to not being on windows 10. I can do the same thing in blender, so no big deal, but the sculpting software looks promising, and I may try that out in the future. thanks for making the tutorial tho--I am sure someone will find it useful. also enjoyed all the spaceships on your sketchfab page. cheers.

@VP thats a very good tutorial, i must say that it will be every usefull to create 3D models with ease. Why don't you put it on youtube though?

I personally found this tutorial really helpful how easily you created that money model, and yeah I liked your spaceship as well, the hornet war drone is awesome looking.

Thanks for sharing😇

Thanks Guest I didn't realise it was Windows 10 only, sorry about that. Blender is way better for modelling anyway.

Thanks just_in_case Youtube is very biased media platform - a lot of my content was deleted/restricted, so I don't like to use YT any more.

Glad you like the spaceships - I made them in an old game called Spore .

@VP

How do you texture your models?
they look really great

texturing in sketchup is a disaster unless you are an architect or carpenter.

Thanks DouweDabbe! - the models were textured directly in 3DBuilder (using its paint tool). I uploaded a video link below. It's just a single click to add textures so takes just a few seconds to texture a whole model. You can also stretch, rotate or reposition textures too in 3DBuilder (very simple and quick and means you can simply download any image from the net to use as a texture without having to prep it first).

If you make the model from a transparent.png picture/image, the textures are applied automatically using the image - you can add your own textures afterwards, just to make the sides look a bit better but on some of my models I didn't even need to texture them, it looked good enough as it was.

After a few years of trying different modelling software, this is the quickest way I've found to make and texture models. I've decided to use 3Dbuilder as my main modelling software even though it's not as fully featured, it's extremely simple and capable.

It's great for quickly making basic low-poly models, just has a few features missing (so it's not 100% perfect) - but with a bit of practice and creativity, you can accomplish quite a lot with it - especially when you explore the slice tool (which lets you cut the model into parts and edit them individually), and the "subtract" option which cuts one shape from another. For example, the pistol and Machine gun in my "Free Weekly Assets" post have more detail around the triggers - the coins, money and table, cage, fence etc, took less than a minute each to make but they look fairly decent to me - I'm happy with them.

One thing to be aware of with 3Dbuilder - you should export your work as .obj format. The default m3f files aren't compatible with Coppercube and they tend to be glitchy - sometimes they can't be edited after being saved. OBJ seems rock-solid with no problems. It exports the textures automatically which are them automatically loaded into coppercube when the model is imported.

This step is optional - but once imported to Coppercube, I usually also add a normal map (which I generate by using the original texture image). Normal maps make the models a lot more detailed without increasing the polycount at all - but it requires a static light source in the scene. (The screenshot of examples is from my Sketchfab account - I didn't use normal-maps for them, just textures - but they still look half decent).

If you want, I'd be more than happy to upload a video showing how simple it is to texture different parts of a model - only problem is - it's only available for Windows 10....or if you want specific help, you can ask here and I'll tell you what I know so far.

Good thing is - as well as making your own models - you can also use 3Dbuilder to import other pre-made models for quick & easy texturing (way easier than sketchup, for those of us who found it a bit of a nightmare).

EG: - I made and textured this circle saw with a single click (using a photo of an actual saw from google images). Select the part of the model to paint (or multiple parts), click "paint", load the image then click on the model to paint it. Setting the "coverage" slider determines how many surfaces are covered in one click (move the slider all the way to the right, the entire selection will be painted with the same texture)......sounds complicated but you can see from the image, it's basically just one click to paint surfaces (then click "apply" to finish painting).....

🔎︎

The textures I use are mainly photos from google image search - some of them are ones I've made myself using the "trial" version of FilterForge10.

Thank you very much, this is great! I did a test and it seems that when we use texture in "stickers" mode on the object, it doesn't show up in Coppercube, only if we use texture in "brush" mode. Do you know if there is any solution to apply "sticker" textures and work in Coppercube? Thank you very much!

Hi, Coppercube does not support stickers (I think stickers are specific to Microsoft's 3mf format). It's possible you may be able to bake the stickers into the model - by exporting as .glb format (from 3Dbuilder) first, then converting the .glb file back to an obj file using any free online converter. Then when you import the .obj into coppercube, the stickers should be imported as textures with the automatically created material (.mtl) file. Hope this helps?
