Is there some way to adjust the thumbnail image so that the viewer can recognize the item in the thumbnail prior to clicking on the image? I have an image that just shows a curtain in the middle of the image while the important thing to see is at the top or the bottom?

I guess you mean in the image gallery? You can set the humbnail image format in the property window, try some of the options and see if it works better for your format. You can also always set it to "original", then you see the whole image, but this might not be looking nicely when you have images with different sizes in there.
