I can't use this engine anymore!

I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to give up on using this program. I mostly like the workflow it has, but the endless limitations it has is just way too overbearing.

The fact that my GI lighting has been calculating on a small area for 5 hours now is just unacceptable. That's silly, stupid and unreasonable. If it's screwed up in any spots (which I'm sure it will be) I'll have to add or change light nodes around and re-calculate. That's a piss-poor implementation! Spending days on a single mesh is simply illogical and dumb + inefficient and will hold me back greatly.

At this point I wish the whole thing would just become open-source. Maybe then some integral stuff could be added and fixed.

My whole project is no longer going to be made in this "engine". It's a shame, since I think the entire application is laid out perfectly and the workflow I devised is more than ideal, but after wasting 2 years working on this game, I just can't take it anymore.

The community which this program had is just about gone too...

Yes, I wouldn't use the light maps too much - I had it go for 6 hours non stop once so gave that idea up completely.

I prefer dynamic lighting anyway and looks better - both for indoor and outdoor areas.

Maybe try using Blender for light mapping instead as I believe you can add lights in and do a better job than CC anyway...

@j9907 come on, don't give up that easily, I still remember the video you sent me of your game and I can tell you put effort on it.

Take a rest if you want to, maybe even try other game engines, but don't stop working on your passion ok ?

Also, I have created this video that talks about how to use Blender to make realistic lighting for CopperCube.

Please if you have any issues regarding this just ask, or even send me your file, I will try to help.

I'm just going to take a very long break from this project. It'll depend on the updates which might come out this year.

@j9907 I remember when we were arguing against kikanaito. Yeah, that toxic guest.
But now, i can understand how he felt & seems like.. we're (or I'm) actually on his side now.

The only thing i can say atm is, CC has potention. Such a big waste to leave it abandoned.

Hope to see you back later but that being said just checking out Leadwerks engine and its also an easy engine to use very much like CC with better functionality but only for pc/linux - comes with a cost though. I certainly hope Niko adds more better stuff to CC as it will fall away otherwise.

Ooo I just check out Leadwerks engine.
I closed the browser when there isn't a JavaScript/ECMAScript programming alt :-(

The one thing which is really keeping me from switching to another engine is virtually no other engines are as simple as CC and also support animated .X meshes! All of my characters are in this format and it's impossible to get them in another format, such as FBX (I bought Ultimate Unwrap 3D - doesn't convert them properly at all).

S2Engine HD is not a viable option either. It's way too unstable and the developer seemingly doesn't care about it. He makes promises and claims, only for them to never happen. As it is now, it has no potential apart from the rendering system it has. If you scrapped everything and just reused the renderer, then maybe something could be made. Other than that? Don't waste your time on this. It can't handle level meshes which are even semi-detailed. It crashes when you save and reload... Not to mention the documentation is almost non-existent, and where it IS written, it's vague as hell!

Interesting to hear about S2Engine as I bought this a few months back thinking it might be a good upgrade one day...

The only other one I also looked at somewhat seriously is the Skyline engine which looks good at first but heard issues with that engine also from someone on this forum who said it crashed a lot also...

I have tried Unreal - too complex & clutted for me and had a look at Unity also but don't want to learn new programming language as time is most important to me - speed of development and ease of use. Having the best graphics for me is not the most important.

I've already started with CC and will finish with it also as I can get things done fairly easily with it - even if it doesn't do some things well...I have so far always found a workaround - thus far...

The reason I don't use Unreal is the same reason I don't use Unity anymore.
You don't even own the engine, you cannot have ONE installer, you have to have an installer manager that THEN install other dependencies, if one day you want to install it on another machine, you will need internet access again, if their server is down, you will come to the realization that all you have is the installer shell, you own nothing.

Same goes for lumberyard that overly complicated thing that nobody uses except for Star Citizen BECAUSE they were already previously using Cry Engine.

Coppercube is FINE, really.
All it needs is to have it's internal rendering replaced with Babylon3D's PBR renderer or ANY PBR renderer of modern times while keeping everything else the same.

Not trying to push Leadwerks at all but just so happen to come across a stack of free assets they got for free from FPS Creator - loads of animated & static meshes all in the .X format...

Seems you cant load these animated .X into CC it seems but you can convert them into static dae meshes at: https://www.meshconvert.com/

I am going through their assets now:
https://www.leadwerks.com/community/topic/15711-all-77-fps-creator-packs-are-free/

Someone supposedly made a link to convert them for leadwerks:
https://www.leadwerks.com/community/topic/1373-how-to-load-a-fps-creatur-modelstep-by-step/

if nothing else makes some nice static meshes...
note - you can get a plugin for GIMP to open and convert the dds textures.

Actually FPSC_MP_20 characters load just fine into CC - quite good animations if you like medieval / fantasy characters....

Maybe can try Godot game engine? You may like GDScript. Vulkan is coming in Godot 4.0. It has 2d and 3d. Themes support in the GUI controls. Can use trenchboom editor via Qodot plugin and etc...

Leadwerks 4 is dead. The developer is focusing on Leadwerks 5 (you need to buy it again). S2Engine is unstable and the dev is focusing on his own game created using S2Engine.
