Some games like Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (on the GameCube) and Amnesia: The Dark Descent make god rays by using flat textures in round patterns. Amnesia does it by flat planes of textures emitting from a window, while the planes may be animated. MP2:E does it by using flat planes with an animated texture, but uses texture blending to prevent the planes from appearing flat.
