Preview not working

I have upgraded to V5 and like V4 the preview doesn't work.

It did when opening for the first time, but only that once. I installed rocketcake on a clean installtion of Windows 10 and still the same problem.

Any ideas how to properly fix this issue?

Cheers - Rod

What exaclty do you mean with "it doesn't work", what happens?

You likely just need to associate the .html extension with a browser, so that if you double-click a html file for example in explorer (which is the same as clicking 'preview' in RocketCake), so that it opens in the browser.

Usually, just installing a browser such as chrome or similar does this automatically. By default, Edge should open even without installing a browser.

When I click on preview the button flashes for a split second. The preview does not open the html file.

When clicking on an html file in explorer it opens with the default browser, which for me is Brave.

Strange. Do you run any unusual software along like a broken anti-virus software or similar? Anything other unusual?

No nothing at all. No anti-virus installed. All installed software works well.

In my other web designers the preview works.

Very strange. I'll have a look and see if I can reproduce this somehow.

@rod, can you try to run RocketCake as administrator to see if it works. Sometime's it's admin privileges that can result in such a behavior.

Under administrator the preview page does open now but is blank, saying "Your file couldn't be accessed".

Can you please also check what is the URL you are getting in the browser when that preview page shows up as blank?

it should generally look something like this.

file:///C:/Users/vazahat/AppData/Local/Temp/rocketcake_preview/index.html

if the last bit of the URL "AppData/Local/Temp/rocketcake_preview/" looks a bit different to you, then it might not load the page, as this the directory in which Rocketcake looks for the file to load for preview.

if you can share the URL it might help a lot to debug the issue you are facing.

Looks the same, I guess identical!

file:///C:/Users/Rod/AppData/Local/Temp/rocketcake_preview/index.html

Strange, then it is probably Rocketcake is somehow not able to write the files in that directory, that's something I am not sure of why it is happening.

You can check if the files are written or not, by manually navigating to that directory through file explorer.

Generally this happens when some broken antivirus or windows defender delete the files sometimes, but you have already mentioned that you are not having any Anitvirus installed.

So, it's hard to detect what is causing the issue.

From what rod writes, it sounds more somehow his browser cannot access that file - for whatever reason. Maybe shortly switch the default browser to edge or chrome and see if they can or if they write a more helpful error message.

yeah, quite possible, if the browser is unable to access the file. As he needs to run RocketCake in admin mode, it is also possible that his browser needs to be run in admin mode too, in order to access the files. It's quite possible. Do check just like @erik mentioned.

Or run the browser in admin mode, while the browser is opened in admin mode, try previewing from RocketCake, if it works, then you probably have to setup admin privileges of your computer.

Erik, Chrome and Edge works when making them the default browser. But Opera and Brave do not open the preview when set as the default browser.

Anyway Niko I am happy to make Chrome the default browser if for no other reason than to use Rocketcake's previewing. Thank you for your patience with me.

I still need to run Rocketcake as administrator " to open Chrome.

Maybe Brave forum can help. If they can I'll post back...

Thanks for letting me know!
I actually tried reproducing the issue now with Win10 and Brave, with various combinations, but I wasn't able to yet - it works perfectly for me.

(Also an idea: Maybe it's how you installed RocketCake - did you use the installer or the portable version? Did you install it using an admin account?)
