You can learn more about open source software

@hanicraft, I might not have proper knowledge about open-source projects, but you can't claim that you created the engine. Unless there are visible drastic changes or heavy modifications to it.
Both engines when looking them at visually look exactly the same to me. Contributing to an open-source project doesn't allow us to claim that we created that engine.

I haven't seen anybody claiming that they created Blender 3D just because they added a new 3D format support to it. However, they can call their addition as a plugin or addon, but can't claim that they created the whole tool.

While your original post clearly says that you are claiming that you created the engine, you didn't mention in the post that you added support for exporting to multiple platforms in Game Maker 8, you are claiming that you created game maker 8. There is a difference in both of them.

You could have said that you made contributions to the repo or modified and updated or added something to game maker 8, or you could have said that I have ported the web version of game maker 8 by that guy as a standalone exe with some additional features, but you can't claim that you created that engine.

I might be wrong with my words above as I said, I don't have proper knowledge of the concept of open source, but it is what it is that I think.

Maybe in the future, whenever you post something that is based on someone else's work, it is better to mention it. Just like the Khel engine, I clearly mentioned that my game engine is based on Irrlicht and uses "ImGUI", so that there will be no confusion and people can get an idea of what kind of stuff they are going to get.

@hanicraft

"In purely private (or internal) use—with no sales and no distribution—the software code may be modified and parts reused without requiring the source code to be released. For sales or distribution, the entire source code needs to be made available to end users, including any code changes and additions—in that case, copyleft is applied to ensure that end users retain the freedoms defined above.[50]"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

Copyleft means you cannot keep the source code closed while using GPL-licensed components.

@just_in_case
yes but i read the gpl license and complied to it
there is nothing wrong with using open source code as long as you comply to license
and yes my bad i should mention open source projects i used, even though gpl does not force it

@hanicraft

You did not comply with the GPL. You must include the ENTIRE source code (your changes and all) with the binary because you have used a GPL-component. It doesn't matter if you release it on a website, it must be included in the distribution itself. This is a copyleft license. Your entire project is now GPL. This means anyone can inspect, modify, and redistribute it (for free or commercially) as long as they maintain the exact same license and give the exact same freedoms to the user.

i seen alot of projects who licensed under gpl have a separate repo for code and a separate compiled binary for distribution ,
go look at some projects for yourself and do some research before coming here and talking nonsense

Just stop and confirm it. You haven't done any changes to it. The files you provide on your github, are the exact same files you've downloaded from another guys web version. You haven't modified anything, you haven't even cloned the source code and bundle the files yourself.

So that what has happened:
1. Wednesday at around 11:00 you have ripped files from the web version of webgm engine running on the github using Cyotek WebCopy.
https://github.com/HaniSoftwares...
🔎︎

2. Same day (technically at 14:00 but it's must likely another time zone, but it's not far since Iran is GMT+3:30) you create a post here.
🔎︎

Most likely you spend some time to figure how to create an app using https://www.decsoftutils.com/htmlcompiler.

3. This one is pure speculation, but it looks like something didn't work or you were trying to figure out the license. So you had to delay the release for a week.

4. 30/03 you finally published itch project, and uploaded files to github, so you're technically comply to the license. You never mentioned github, or original project on itch page.

So I suppose the business model was brilliant here.
1. Find free software
2. Claim it yours
3. Release a "beta" version for people to test it for you for free
4. Probably, start selling it

thing i did was completely legal and the open source project owner said he abandoned it, so why not revive this project

It's legal. That's not my claim.

You claimed you made, even though you haven't write a single line of code.

You take people for fools, by selling them what they can get for free, and by making them test "your" project for you.

I also don't understand why is it allowed to post announcement of other game engines on this forum. I thought this section is for stuff related to coppercube.

It's not legal. He didn't follow the terms of the license. He was even too lazy to include the original license in the distribution. People are just supposed to guess he has a repo. What makes matters worse is he asked for $39.99 on Itch like he did something. Shameless.
