Currently there is no easy way to control the order in which 2D Overlay items are rendered - it would be helpful if the 2D Overlay items had a "z-index" option, similar to CSS.

Currently, the order in the scene graph is used. An overlay in the scene graph after another overlay is rendered over that one. Maybe that helps?
You could even easily rearrange them by moving them from folder to folder.
